In a way, that makes sense. If you’re interested in starting an online business, you have to learn a few things. One of the first things you do is subscribe to a lot of internet marketing related lists. Then you end up buying a few courses, investing in software for your business, and joining membership sites.

You get to see first hand how products are promoted and hear about how the product owner is making a lot of money really fast. You want to get in on the action, so you sign up as an affiliate for these products and start promoting.

Here’s where the reality starts to set in. You spend the time and money to start promoting the latest hot internet marketing product, and you can’t seem to make any sales. The product had a lot of interest, but you’re not getting results. This doesn’t happen every time, but it happens often enough. Why?

Internet Marketing is a good market to be in, but there are some things you need to realize. The affiliates that make the most money are the ones who are able to promote the product on launch day. With the product launch sequence that is used, there is a lot of anticipation built up before launch, and if you’re not able to become an affiliate before the launch, you’re going to miss out on the initial surge of buyers.

One of the big problems with affiliate marketing is getting credit for the sale. There are ways to cloak your link so that it’s more difficult to tell that it IS an affiliate link. The problem is that if someone wants to bypass your link, it’s almost impossible to stop them.

Another problem is that even if someone clicks on your affiliate link and gets to the sales page, if they don’t purchase right then, you won’t get credit for the sale if they decide to buy later unless they come back and click on your link. There are some affiliate offers that allow anyone who visits through your link to get cookied so that even if they buy later, you get credit for the sale.

Good question, and there is a really good answer. First, it gets the attention of potential affiliates, and gets more affiliates on board. That means more exposure for the product. This is really a good way to get affiliates, especially if you’re a new guy or gal on the block. By offering 100 percent commissions, you get other marketers selling for you.

The next question is why anyone would sell a product and make absolutely no money from selling it. Simple. Once someone buys, they are going to be on the product sellers list. If they are happy with the product that they just purchased, it gives the product owner the opportunity to offer other products on the back end. In other words, repeat sales.

This is a technique that you should pay attention to if you’re ready to roll out your first product. You don’t have any testimonials or a track record, so it’s more difficult to get people to trust you and make a purchase. It’s a lot easier if you have an army of affiliates promoting the product for you. They are spending the time and money getting traffic to your site. Make sure that you another product ready that you can offer your new customers. Now that you have them on your list, offer the second product. With the second product, you keep all of the profits, and you have the opportunity to make multiple sales to these customers over time.

Of course, once you get established, you won’t be giving such a high commission rate. But when you’re getting started, this is a very effective way of getting affiliates and  customers.

You don’t have to buy the product to see if it’s any good. Still, there are two important steps I recommend that you take before you take the time to create a marketing campaign for an affiliate product.

1. The first thing you can do is to do a search for reviews of the product you have in mind. Enter “product name review” and start visiting the sites that come up. A lot of these sites are going to be other affiliates that are promoting the product. Some of these sites will be pretty basic and just a pitch for the product. Other sites will be really good, and worthy of taking notes. Again, don’t copy, but learn from what they do and use this information to create your promotions.

Another thing that you should look for are forums that come up in the search engine results. Here is where you can see what people who have actually purchased the product think of it. This is pure gold! If the product is good, and the customers are happy, you’ll be able to read why they like the product. You can take notes and use these notes to craft your promotion. It is also a good indicator that the product will sell well. If there are a lot of complaints, remove this product from your list and move on to the next one.

2. Go and read the sales page for each product that you are considering. I mean really read it, word for word. Does the sales message draw you in? Are the testimonials well written and convincing? Does the sales letter do a good job of selling the product with bullet points and benefits for the reader?

This is so important because if you’re going to spend the time and/or money to promote a product, you want to presell the reader and let the sales page get the visitor to click on the order link and buy. If the sales page is full of typos, has bad graphics, or is just a poor excuse for a sales letter, don’t waste your time.

The good news is that there are so many products out there for you to promote that you don’t have to settle for any of them. Don’t just look at how much you’ll make for each sale. That won’t do you much good if the product has a lot of refunds and complaints, or if the sales page is not good at converting visitors into buyers.

The reason I’m bringing this up is because I have done this myself. The way it worked for me is that I started with keyword research and found keywords that had a lot of searches. I figured that if a lot of people were searching for these keywords, I could make sales. So I set up web pages and wrote articles around these keywords. There are two things I failed to do.

The first thing was that I didn’t check to make sure that the keywords I was targeting were keywords that led to sales. What I should have done was to make sure that there were several people advertising on PPC. Then I should have looked at the top search engine listings to see what came up and noticed whether or not there were sites selling products that targeted those keywords. I could have gone to Amazon.com and looked at the top books and magazines related to my keywords.

The second thing was that I didn’t take the time to see where my potential customers were located What forums did they frequent? What blogs did they comment on? What newsletters did they subscribe to? What products were they buying and what problems did they have that they were trying to solve?

The solution is easy, but from what I’ve been reading in the marketing forums, it’s a point that is often missed. As I mentioned, I missed it too.

The reason it’s so important to take the time to do this research is because it will save you time and money. You will ultimately save time because you will be working on offers, ads, and content that will bring you paying customers. Getting a lot of traffic won’t do a lot of good if most of your visitors are looking for free stuff.

It’s also important because once you know that there are people that are willing to pay for what you are  promoting, you want to spend all of your time getting their attention. You can do this in several ways. You can find the forums they visit and start contributing. You can do the same thing with blogs. Add your comment to blogs relating to your niche and include a link to your site. In the case of blogs and forums, you can see if they accept advertising, and consider putting up your ads there.  Find out what newsletters your market subscribes to and advertise there.

You can only do these things once you know what your market is buying and where they hang out. It’s not hard, and it can mean the difference between success and failure.

What makes it a problem is that some affiliate programs make you wait a long time to get paid – sometimes 2 weeks or more.

If you want to get paid in a shorter time frame, here’s good news. There are affiliate programs available that pay you much sooner. And there are some that will pay you    immediately into your PayPal account so you can access your commissions right away.

I’ll get a list of 8-10 offers that look promising, and make a note of how much commission I’ll make on each sale, and how often I’ll get paid.

By doing this, I can look at my available advertising funds, and decide how much I can spend to promote these offers and how long I am willing to wait to get paid for my sales. I can also promote a couple of products that pay commissions every 2 weeks and a couple of products that pay commission instantly. That way I can pay for my ads with the instant commission products.

Ideally, I would prefer to only promote offers that pay immediately into my PayPal account, but depending on the market I’m entering, this may not be an option.

The bottom line is that you don’t have to wait to get your commissions. There are affiliate offers that will pay you immediately at the time of sale. All you have to do is search them out and start promoting.

If you’ve never blogged before, and it’s all new to you, getting used to how your blog works can be a challenge. The default themes are pretty dull, so you’ll probably want to install a different theme. And there are a lot of plugins available that can further add to the effectiveness of your blog.

It can be kind of confusing at first. If you already have hosting, then I will repeat myself and tell you to set up a “test” blog so you can learn how it works.

If you don’t have a hosting account, then you can still get started with blogging by signing up for a free account at blogger.com or wordpress.com. There’s no reason to spend money on hosting until you’re ready for it. And with these free blogs, you can learn a lot.

Don’t worry about making your blog look professional, or worry that your posts won’t be very good. What you’re after is the experience of posting to a blog, so that when you set up your own site and blog, you’ll be ready.

They don’t have to be long. 300 words is plenty. If you want to use PLR articles, that’s okay too. This is just practice for now. (Don’t use PLR articles on a blog you’re trying to get traffic for).
