One way to get a good idea of what keywords on your list are worth pursuing is to go to Google and do a search on them. There are a couple of things that you should take not of.

The first is to see what web sites are listed on the first couple of pages of the results for that keyword. The thing you’re looking for is if the web sites have anything to do with the niche you’re targeting. Is there a lot of competition for that key phrase or can you get your page to the first page of the listings?

Or do you find that after the first two or three listings, the web sites have little or nothing to do with the keyword you entered? Sure, it makes it a whole lot easier to get your page a good listing, but there’s also a good chance that there is little to no traffic for that term to make it worth it to target.

Then notice the ads on the right side and top of the page. Are there several ads listed? How many pages of ads are there? If there are lots of ads, you’ll have to consider how much you’re willing to spend to enter that market. If you’re not paying for ads, you still want to see how many ads are listed. A lot of ads can mean a lot of interest which can mean opportunity to enter the market and take some of the profits.

If you see one or two ads, beware. If there are no ads at all, wait before you get all excited about the prospect of low cost clicks. There’s usually a reason that there aren’t ads for that keyword – buyers aren’t entering that keyword in their search box. Advertisers have decided that there’s no reason to spend money on that keyword.

Now you might find a great opportunity sometimes, a keyword that has a lot of potential and little or no competition. But you may find that there are also not very many searches.

It’s real important to pay attention to the “tire kicker” keywords. Any keyword phrase with the word “free” is not usually going to get you a visitor who wants to spend money.

So once you get your keyword list, and toss out the ones with little or no searches, plug in a few of the keywords that you want to target and see what you find. A little time spent doing this can save you a lot of time when it’s time to publish web pages or buy advertising.
