Tips And Strategies For Effective Online Marketing
Why A List Of Thousands Of Keywords Isn't Enough
We know that keywords are important. We realize that our sites are ranked in part by the keywords we use. The more keywords we can find, the better. More keywords equal more profit. Right?
Have you ever heard or read that you should get as big of a keyword list as you can? Or maybe you’ve gotten a file with thousands of keywords for each of several niches. What the heck are you supposed to do with thousands of keywords?
My point is that I’ve done that – compiled lists of hundreds and thousands of keywords. The only problem is that once I have my nice big list of keywords, I have NO IDEA of what to do with them. Keywords by themselves aren’t doing me any good.
I need a little more information, such as search count. However you get the search count, by using free information or a paid solution, it’s a vital piece of information so you can sort your list from the top down – the most searched for keywords at the top of the list and listing in descending order.
What you’ll soon see is that as you get down the list, the search counts get a little thin. At some point you’ll see less than 10 searches a day for a keyword, then 3 a day, then 1 a day, then none.
So you have a list of thousands of keywords, but there are a lot of them that are a waste of your time. And you can see the keywords that get searched for A LOT. A keyword with a large number of searches means you need to look at something else.
Competing web sites. How many sites are targeting these high volume keywords? This is important to know as well. If there is a lot of competition, you’ll have a harder time getting a good search engine listing, and you’ll pay more for your adwords to get a first page result.
You need keywords. Then you need to find out how many searches each keyword is getting each day. Then there is the competition to consider.
You need a way to get all of this information, and a way to filter your keywords so that you can select the ones that are worth your time to target. If you don’t take the time to get search volume and competition, you could end up spending a lot of time and effort into your business and end up with nothing to show for it.
Getting your keywords and supporting data is vital, and there are several options out there. You may end up using more than one tool to get the job done. The bottom line is that a list of thousands of keywords won’t do you much good unless you can drill down and find the money keywords for your market.
