It’s almost a cliche by now that serious marketers need to build a list. Once YOU decide that it’s time for you to get started with your own list building efforts, there are several critical steps you need to take to build a quality list.

One of the first things to consider is what your landing page is going to contain and how it’s going to look. It’s getting more difficult to get someone to enter their name and email address by just putting up a little opt-in box on every page of your site.

It’s not that it’s a bad idea to put an opt-in box on every page of your site. It’s that if that’s the only way you’re using to build a list, you may be missing out on lot of subscribers.

Since there’s no right or perfect way to get subscribers, you’re going to have to try a few ways of getting subscribers to see what works for you. According to Jimmy D. Brown, a renowned list building expert, it starts with an effective landing page.

Your landing page needs to look good, have the code entered so visitors can enter their information to subscribe, and content that convinces them to give your list a try.

Your landing page is really a sales page for your list. You can’t just ask them to subscribe. You have to tell them what they are going to get from being on your list. It has to be worth their time.

Tell them all of the benefits of being on your list. What are they going to learn? Will you offer subscriber only discounts? How often will they be receiving messages? Why should they open and read your messages once they hit their inbox?

One way to learn how  to create an effective landing page is to go to the sites in your niche that offer newsletters, and see how they are laid out. Notice the headlines and bullet points.

Once you see a pattern that the sites in your niche are using, you can adapt the ideas for your own landing page. The landing page has to sell the visitor on your list, so take the time to make it as persuasive and compelling as possible.
