Double Opt-In And Why It’s Important
Getting someone to sign up for your list is the first step in building your list. It’s a first step, but there are other steps to take before you have a profitable list.
Once you have a landing page that lays out all of the advantages of joining your list and gets a lot of your visitors to enter their name and email address, you send them your first message.
And if you follow the advice of most marketing “gurus”, your new subscriber will receive a message that asks them to click a link to confirm that they wanted to subscribe to your list. Most autoresponder services have this email as a standard feature.
In case you’re new to email marketing, this is called double opt-in. What happens is someone enters their name and email address. Once they submit their info, they are sent to a page that you specify when you set up your list.
At the same time, they will be sent an email notifying them that their name and email address was submitted to be added to your list. They will be instructed to click on a link to confirm that they want to be on the list. If they delete the message or do nothing, they will not be added to your list.
This is used so that people can’t go around entering names and email addresses of anyone they want without that person’s permission. If someone started to get emails from you without signing up for them first, they could report you as a spammer.
Once someone clicks on the confirmation link, you’ll have a record that they did subscribe. That way, they can’t get your account shut down by reporting you for sending junk email.
You can decide to let someone sign up for your list without having to confirm their subscription, but you won’t have a record of their confirmation email, and you run the risk of being reported for spam and getting your account shut down.
A good practice that I’ve seen on quite a few confirmation pages is an explanation of what is in the email they are going to be receiving, and instructions on what to click on to confirm their subscription.
