Probably one of the biggest reasons that I haven’t had more success and progress in the past is procrastination. All I have to do is look in the mirror and I can see the problem.

One thing I have noticed about myself is that I have a hard time getting started on a task. When it comes to my online activities, I waste time going through email, looking at stats, going to forums, while I’m trying to decide what to do.

Once I decide what to focus on and get started, I will keep at the task until it’s done. And usually a lot more gets done than I planned. But getting started. That can be a challenge.

One thing that helps me is something I heard Mike Litman say. If you haven’t come across Mike Litman, do a search. It’ll be worth your while. He said something to the effect of “You don’t need to get it right. Just get it going”, or something like that.

That is good advice for me. I find myself making excuses for why I’m not doing something I know I should be doing. After I get the money to buy that software, I’ll get going. After I read that ebook, I’ll get going. After a few weeks of studying, I’ll get going.

The truth is that there will never be a time when everything is perfectly planned out. The best time to get started is now.

Goal setting is good, and I have a few good books on the subject as well as a couple of audio tapes. But I don’t do it. What I have been doing is to ask myself a question at the start of each work day.

That question is:
What is the one thing that I could do that would make a difference in my business today? If I only did one thing, what would it be?

I didn’t come up with this, by the way. I read it somewhere, but I don’t remember where. But it works for me. If I go ahead and do the one thing that will impact my business in a positive way, I find that I am on a roll and will end up having a really productive day.
