Tips On Buying Electronic Gifts

December 14, 2008 | Filed under: Marketing

This is a little off topic, but it’s something that can save all of us when gettting an electronic gift for someone this holiday season. It really covers buying electronics any time of the year.

If you’ve ever purchased a new printer or appliance, you’ve come across a potential problem. Buy a  new printer, get it home, put in the ink cartridges, and you’re ready to go. Right? Maybe not. Most printers don’t come with a cable so you can connect it to your computer. If you don’t have one, or you didn’t know that you needed a cable, you would have to make another trip to the store and get a cable before you can use the printer.

I just bought a new stove/range. It doesn’t come with a power cord. I knew that, so I removed the one from the old stove and used that. My new washer didn’t come with water hoses.

When you are buying anything, either as a gift or for yourself, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Are you buying a battery operated toy or device? Often you will get batteries when you purchase. Sometimes you don’t. Never assume that the batteries are included.

Does the electronic gift you’re purchasing have the capability to attach to another devices? Maybe a computer or a television? Find out if the hardware to hook them up is included.  A key point is to determine what type of inputs the device has so you can get the correct cable. There are different cables for different inputs.

If you get someone a DVD player, they won’t be able to use it if they don’t have any DVDs to play. You might want to get them a DVD so they can actually use the gift right away.

If you get someone a video game, find out if you need a piece of hardware to play the game, a controller or addon.

You get the point. Take a little time to find out if there is anything not included with the product that you will need to actually use it. It’ll make your life a whole lot easier.
